Air India on Monday announced the suspension of its direct services between Delhi and Washington, DC, starting September 1, due to multiple operational reasons. The airline said the decision aims to maintain the reliability and integrity of the airline's overall route network.

Fleet upgrades cause aircraft shortage.

One major reason for the suspension is a temporary shortage in Air India’s fleet. Last month, the airline began upgrading 26 of its Boeing 787-8 aircraft as part of a large-scale retrofit programme designed to improve passenger comfort and in-flight facilities. This project will see several aircraft out of service at any given time until late 2026, affecting the carrier’s ability to operate certain long-haul routes.

Airspace restrictions add to operational challenges.

The airline also continues to face difficulties due to the ongoing closure of Pakistan’s airspace. This restriction forces longer alternative routes for some international flights, adding to travel times and operational complexities for long-haul services, including those to Washington, DC.

Passengers holding bookings for travel to or from Washington after September 1 will be personally informed by the airline. They will be given options to rebook on alternative flights or receive a full refund, depending on their preferences.

Alternate routes to Washington and North America

Even after the direct service ends, Air India customers will still be able to reach Washington, DC, with one-stop connections through New York (JFK), Newark (EWR), Chicago, or San Francisco. The airline’s partnerships with Alaska Airlines, United Airlines, and Delta Air Lines will allow passengers to book a single itinerary and have their luggage checked through to their final destination.

Air India confirmed it will maintain its nonstop services from India to six North American destinations, including Toronto and Vancouver in Canada. The airline said it remains committed to providing strong connectivity between India and North America, even as it undertakes upgrades to its fleet.
